Coinbase adds ‘DeFi mullet’ to UK offering in drive to become an everything exchange

In a strategic move to solidify its position in the UK market, Coinbase has announced the launch of its decentralized exchange services, aiming to transform into an “everything exchange.” This initiative is a part of a broader plan that CEO Keith Grose revealed is crucial for the company, marking the UK as its most significant market outside the United States. With a robust workforce and a growing presence in Britain, Coinbase is not only focusing on expanding its services but also on influencing crypto regulations in favor of decentralized finance (DeFi).

The new service, branded as the “DeFi mullet,” promises users an intuitive Coinbase experience while offering access to decentralized trading platforms like Uniswap and Aerodrome. This integration will allow UK customers to trade assets native to Coinbase’s layer 2 network, Base, and eventually expand to additional networks such as Solana. Coinbase estimates that this development will enhance their trading offerings from a mere 300 assets to millions, significantly broadening the scope for users.

Coinbase’s approach emphasizes the necessity of safety within the DeFi space. Grose highlighted the importance of collaborating with “trusted third parties” to evaluate and mitigate risks associated with asset ownership concentration, which can lead to potential vulnerabilities like rug pulls. By addressing these concerns, Coinbase aims to reassure both users and regulators that DeFi can operate safely and effectively.

As part of its ambition to evolve into an “everything exchange,” Coinbase has also ventured into stock trading and prediction markets, with plans to introduce more features in the UK. Grose hinted that users should expect similar offerings to those already available in the US, although specifics remain undisclosed. This expansion aligns with CEO Brian Armstrong’s vision of bringing a wide array of financial services on-chain, further integrating cryptocurrency into mainstream finance.

As the crypto market continues to evolve, Coinbase’s latest efforts underscore its determination to lead in the decentralized finance sector while navigating regulatory landscapes effectively. With the UK rollout, the company is poised to capture a larger share of the market, pushing the boundaries of what a cryptocurrency exchange can offer.
