Ripple Founder Pivots $1 Billion From XRP Fortune Into New Investment

2 min read

In a bold shift away from the cryptocurrency realm, Jed McCaleb, the co-founder of Ripple and Stellar (XLM), is redirecting an impressive $1 billion from his XRP wealth into an ambitious investment focused on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This move not only underscores the potential of AI but also highlights McCaleb’s ongoing commitment to innovation beyond crypto.

According to an interview with Forbes, McCaleb plans to channel a substantial portion of his estimated $3.9 billion in XRP holdings into AGI research, a field that aims to create intelligent systems capable of understanding and learning any intellectual task that a human can perform. This decision follows his earlier commitment of $1 billion to develop a private space station projected for completion in 2025.

McCaleb’s new venture will be spearheaded through the Astera Institute, a California-based non-profit organization he founded. The institute has recently intensified its focus on neuroscience-inspired methodologies in AI development. Alongside the $1 billion earmarked for AGI, McCaleb has also pledged an additional $600 million specifically dedicated to neuroscience research. His goal is to leverage insights from the human brain to construct AI systems that are not only more capable but also safer and easier for humans to manage.

In his discussion with Forbes, McCaleb expressed his concerns regarding conventional AI methods, particularly the limitations of transformer models, which excel at making predictions yet fall short in areas like long-term planning and autonomous decision-making. He envisions a brain-inspired framework that could lead to a more intuitive and controllable AI system.

Interestingly, McCaleb reflected on his trajectory within the cryptocurrency space, referring to it as “a big detour” from his long-standing passion for artificial intelligence. He emphasized that AI represents a transformative frontier for humanity, a belief he holds with great conviction. Though he has distanced himself from Ripple and divested his XRP holdings by 2022, McCaleb’s legacy in crypto remains significant, stemming from his foundational role in developing the Ripple protocol and the XRP Ledger.

As the crypto market continues to evolve, McCaleb’s pivot to AI could signal a growing trend among tech innovators seeking to explore the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence, potentially setting the stage for groundbreaking advancements in both fields.
